Make a Difference Day is an annual event sponsored by USA Weekend Magazine. The day is one of volunteerism and awareness which encourages people from all walks of life to help those in need in their community. Because the mission of Make a Difference Day was much bigger than the good works of MAGIC, Blair Hornstine and her brother Adam made sure that MAGIC regularly participated in Make A Difference Day Events. These events were organized by Blair in conjunction with other local youth volunteer organizations, such as Together as One and the Juvenile Justice Commission. Together with these groups, MAGIC helped collect food for the Food Bank of South Jersey.
But Blair Hornstine and MAGIC’s involvement with the Food Bank did not end on Make A Difference Day- they continued working with the food bank long after the day was over, eventually recruiting many public and parochial schools throughout three counties to help collect food and raise awareness for the bank. Thanks to Blair Hornstine’s involvement, volunteers collected over thousands of pounds of food for the food bank!
In addition to her work with the South Jersey Food Bank, Blair Hornstine also donated money to the Make a Difference Day Scholarship Fund, and won money from the Sears and Levi Youth Empowerment Grant for to use towards MAGIC’s 2000 Make a Difference Day activities.
The Tri- County Prom Dress Drive
In addition to the food she collected for the South Jersey Food Bank, Blair Hornstine used her connections at the food bank to help launch yet another MAGIC project- the Tri-County Prom Dress Drive. This collaborative effort spanned three counties and over twenty schools and businesses, and collected over 600 prom dresses and formal accessories for economically disadvantaged teenage girls who may not have otherwise been able to afford to go to their high school proms or other school formals.
