Smile Train is an organization which provides free cleft palate and lip surgery to impoverished children around the globe. Blair Hornstine became involved with Smile Train in 1999, when she, along with the members of MAGIC decided to spread their good works to children outside of their immediate community. Blair Hornstine learned that for only $250, a child could receive beneficial reconstructive surgery. For all the money she had raised through MAGIC, $250 seemed like a relatively small amount- especially considering the results. So together with the backing of MAGIC, she undertook a major letter writing campaign, reaching out to over 400 New Jersey schools, encouraging them to raise funds on their own to donate to Smile Train. Blair Hornstine also talked to anyone who would listen- adults, children, family, friends- even complete strangers. By 2000, Blair Hornstine had personally raised enough money to fund ten Smile Train operations. Schools she recruited to help raised enough for dozens more. Blair was even invited to the People’s Republic of China to view the problem first hand and to personally meet representatives from the charity in China which administers the cleft palate surgery to affected Chinese children.
